The Walpole Yearbook – my article on Social Media in Luxury

I’ve just posted my article on Social Media in the Luxury sector on my blog:

https://pencil.wpengine.com/the-walpole-yearbook-article-on-social-media/

The article was a short one, written to stimulate debate in the luxury sector, where adoption of social media both lagging and also challenged as to whether it’s relevant to the sector.

Research on this was really interesting, and I came across some fun companies (especially ThisNext.com which is now a firm favourite as an exemplar of social-meets-brands-meets-commerce).

e-Consultancy and cScape’s 2009 Customer Engagement Survey

The third annual cScape/e-consultancy survey on Customer Engagement has been published, and it’s one of the biggest samples to date.

You can see the press release and e-consultancy’s version, but you should also mosey over to cScape’s Customer Engagement Unit to see Richard Sedley’s introduction and to request a ‘designed’ version of the report 😉 You can also flick through the report via the Issu embedded pdf.

My small contribution was piece on Sustaining Profitability in a Challenging Retail Climate, and it’s therefore a pity to see that only 51% of the sample are focusing more on customers as a result of the downturn/recession.

An interesting report and certainly food for thought as marketers in particular think through how they’ll make their targets next year – surely a ruthless focus on converting “purchasers” to “customers” and sustaining meaningful commercial relations will come to the top of the list?

InCirculation – Monetisation Model article

I was pleased to be asked to write a column for InCirculation Magazine on the “monetisation model” that I’d developed with Craig Hanna of e-consultancy. We’d been engaged by one of the UK’s leading publishers to work with their senior teams to incorporate digital revenue streams into their daily activities. This model was the result – a workshop-based approach that takes a structured approach together with brainstorming, forming and evaluative techniques.

Here’s the pdf archive of the article.

If you’re interested in hearing more about the Model, or the workshop/training programme it supports, please either contact me or Craig Hanna (Training Director) at e-consultancy.com.

Internet Retailer editorial

Internet Retailer is now uncloaked and is gradually taking on its own life. It’s remarkably exciting seeing the subscriber numbers notch up and the press releases and leads start arriving at the ever-open editor’s inbox.

Selectivity is an issue since many of the releases I’m getting are just “something to do with the internet or technology” and don’t really address the specific concerns of ‘internet retailers’ or etailers. There are already some excellent forums and publications which focus on individual specialisms (eg retail technology, or fashion, or catalogue retail, or online security…). Internet Retailer though is focusing on the intersection of these skills and interests.

I’ve also published the first editorial – I’ve reproduced it in full after the jump – but it’s interesting to see from a catchup of my RSS subscriptions that there are very different interpretations of Google’s new Checkout and its impact on etail. My view is that it’ll be welcomed by consumers (who don’t trust retailers for the most part) and it’ll pose a challenge to the survival of weak retail brands as Google become the shop front for the digital consumer. It’s worth having a look at the comment on Techcrunch to see a totally different view.

In the meantime let me know what you think of Internet Retailer, good or bad. Oh, and don’t forget to mail me with any tips, leads and suggestions.
