Job vacancy: Web Editor, InternetRetailing.net | Job Listings | E-consultancy.com

We’re hiring again at Internet Retailing 🙂

Job Description
Our readers say we’re good but our ambition’s to be even better. Our growth is allowing us to appoint a dedicated Web Editor for our newly expanded web portal (being released at the end of September).

We require someone who has the experience and panache to turn our portal into the main gateway for the Internet Retailing sector.

Initially this is a part time role with a commitment of 8-12 hours/week, spread over the working week, focused on two email newsletters per week.

This position is not office-based and so geography is not an issue provided that you can make regular publishing meetings in London.

More details on the ad page, but mail me if you’ve questions or would like to apply.

No agencies, btw, means “no agencies”. Thanks 🙂

BBC NEWS – Pig fat to be turned into diesel

I’m not sure what to say. Chatting to a friend over the weekend about biodiesel we were debating whether the water cost (for growing the crops as biomatter) would become as problematic as the carbon cost – especially following an interesting article in the RSA journal a month or so ago about how some food practices “export” the water impact from rich countries to poor. The article, entitled “Water Fight” notes that “it takes 11,000 litres to grow the feed for enough cow to make a hamburger, and between 2,000 and 4.000 litres for that cow to fill its udders with a litre of milk”.

That’s quite a thought – especially for a Londoner with the drought conditions of last summer still in mind.

Leaving aside the rather unpleasant thought of smouldering pig-fat emanating from the exhaust pipe, I wonder whether the overall impact of raising more swine – with the cost in foodstuffs, slurry, the electricity or gas to render the corpses and other cheery thoughts – will actually end up being more sustainable than burning old trees or non-oinking biomass.

6 minutes 40 seconds: Pecha Kucha

cubicgarden.com…

Ian Forrester’s ever-interesting blog has taught me something new yet again: “Pecha Kucha” .

Not only is this a fun approach to presentations, but the neat delicious.salted.com gizmo will create a timed presentation for you from your last 20 del.icio.us bookmarks – complete with live countdown clock to the next page.

The linked movie on Ian’s page shows that this can be fun, although I can’t be help thinking it’d be more fun having to extemporise about someone else’s bookmarks…

With so much of life being absorbed by enforced staring at ppt I really hope that this high-energy, mercifully-brief format becomes a new corporate standard 🙂

Innovation Agenda: Events: Innovation Reading Circle

Really interesting ‘Innovation Reading Circle’ event last night, arranged by Nico MacDonald and kindly hosted at LBi by Lorenzo Wood.

The evening had an interesting ‘twist’ in that the author, Professor David Edgerton, joined us and gave not only an intro to the book, its genesis and the academic context but then participated in the conversations and addressed questions at the end. Part “interesting chat”, part “book club” and part “seminar”, it was a really interesting evening.

Nico will be writing a meta-review of the evening (to which I’ll be contributing my notes, so no review here for the moment!) – link to follow shortly.

“Just the One” – March 2007

Venue details.

Birds are singing, spring is sprung and the nights are getting longer… Yes – it’s time for some more drinks!

Our last gathering was at the end of November and, since then, a general level of mania has prevailed: the digital world has gone wild!

Before I start reminiscing about 1999, let’s move onto the details:

Venue: St Chads
Date: 22 March (Thursday)
Time: 1830hours onwards.

If you’d like to come and aren’t already on the list, please check out the website – www.justtheone.org and the link to the mailman list management interface. Any queries to the ListOwner. 🙂

Cheers!

“Just the One”: November 28, 2006

Venue details.

So, with Christmas approaching we’re seizing the opportunity to have the last drinks we could without having to call them “Christmas Drinks”.

Time, then, for another “just the one” gathering – a chance to meet and catch up on life, jobs, business, tech toys and whatever else takes your fancy. The last one was in August so lots will have happened since then…

I’ve had a quick chat with the venue and it seems that we’re safe from antler-wearing Christmas parties (for now!) so there’s no need for any weird outfits. Unless you want to of course.

So – to summarise:

Venue: St Chads
Date: 28 November (Tues)
Time: 1830hours onwards.

Let me know if you’re coming – looking forward to seeing y’all.

UPDATE: ooooh – we’ve now got a website – www.justtheone.org. It’s remarkable for adding nothing at all to this info, except for a link to the mailman list management interface. We’ve also, obviously, got a list. If we’ve missed you in error please just subscribe. Any queries to the ListOwner. 🙂

PocketMod – paper, pocket, disposable organiser

PocketMod: The Free Disposable Personal Organizer

Wonderful.

Having recently dumped the Treo650 (or “threo”, I should say, since it was my third unremittingly crap, subfunctional, crash-happy ‘pocket-anchor’) I am just getting used to a mobile phone that – erk – works. I am also rather enjoying “bits of paper” as a great always-on, crash-free way of dumping thoughts from my brain to my pocket (in case they rub against my skull and wear a hole in it).

The veritable Hipster PDA has already been well covered but I never liked the bulldog clip.

I’ve been enjoying origami things of late – notably the devastatingly wonderful origami envelope – and this PocketMod combines simple paper, a tiniest touch of folding elan and a rather nifty interface that allows you to ‘build’ your own notebook.

Anything from blank pages to a sudoku addict’s journey pad, it’s a slick interface and a neat idea. Best of all though – especially at half term – is that my kids love them and are currently running around the house with their coloured-in ‘fairy books’.

Digital Leica: the M8

I hope that this is true and – if so – that someone gives me one.

UPDATE: it is true. No-one, so far however, has given me one.
